When you find out you will die, that’s when you decide to live.

It wasn’t until she decided to die, that Veronika found a reason to live.

It’s Saturday and again I decided to take the afternoon off so I went to the city, met up with Tim and we went malling. He had to buy something at National Bookstore for his sister’s wedding so I went with him. While he was looking for whatever it was he wanted, I went to the bestseller’s section and looked over the books that I haven’t read yet. And Paulo Coelho’s Veronika Decides To Die caught my eye. I have heard of this book many times before but I haven’t got the chance to read it. So after a little thinking I decided to buy a copy for myself.

After reading the first chapter, I decided that I love this book already. Paulo Coelho is such a great writer. I’ll continue reading and I’ll put the things I’ve learned here later on. And also the things that needs to be off my mind.

I browsed the internet and I learned that there’s a movie  still in production process based on this book. Sarah Michelle Gellar will star as Veronika. It’s going to be out in 2009.

Veronika is 24 and she decides to die?  She has everything but she decided to die? Why?

That’s what I’m going to found out.

I have been listening to various kinds of music since I was a child. I remember when I was a little girl, every time my father plays his tapes and CDs, I join with the singing even though I don’t know the lyrics of the songs. It just makes me happy. :)

My father has an extensive collection of music. If I’m down and I want to listen to something that could really lift up my spirit – I just listen to reggae music – especially Bob Marley’s music.

I watched the movie “I Am Legend” just last week. Actually this movie came out last summer but I didn’t have the time to watch it then. Or maybe I was just afraid of the theme? Hehe. I thought it was about zombies and everybody dying again or something. That’s why I kept putting off watching it even though Tim has bought a DVD. Well, to make the story short, I finally watched it last week. And I scolded myself for waiting too long. It really is a great movie! I admire Will Smith’s acting. He is a very good actor. The movie is about not giving up and having faith.

Now why am I talking about “I Am Legend” now when I was talking about reggae music earlier? Here’s why – Will Smith’s character’s favorite song was Bob Marley’s “Three Little Birds!” Again, like what happened when I watched the movie “Mamma Mia”,memories came flooding back. Three Little Birds is my most favorite song by Bob Marley. I’m not a die-hard reggae fan but I do take pleasure in this kind of music and I go to bars and restaurants that feature reggae bands from time to time. It’s a great way to relieve stress.

I know Robert “Bob” Nesta Marley died even before I was born ( I was born 1985, Marley died 1981) but it doesn’t hinder me from admiring his music, opinions and beliefs. He’s a good man. He was born to a white English Jamaican father and a black Jamaican mother. He suffered from racial prejudice as a youth because of his mixed racial origins and also faced questions about his own racial identity throughout his life but instead of dwelling in this, he made music and made himself widely known in the whole world. He is a revered performer of reggae music and is credited for helping spread Jamaican music to the worldwide audience.

Now, I’ll put here in my blog Bob Marley and the Wailer’s song, my personal favorite – “Three Little Birds.” This is a song that could cheer everyone up on a bad day or can make us pursue our dreams. A song that makes us not want to give up. Even though Bob Marley is dead, his songs still lives in us. Enjoy!

Three Little Birds

Dont worry about a thing,
cause every little thing gonna be all right.
Singin: dont worry about a thing,
cause every little thing gonna be all right!

Rise up this mornin,
Smiled with the risin sun,
Three little birds
Pitch by my doorstep
Singin sweet songs
Of melodies pure and true,
Sayin, (this is my message to you-ou-ou:)

Singin: dont worry bout a thing,
cause every little thing gonna be all right.
Singin: dont worry (dont worry) bout a thing,
cause every little thing gonna be all right!

Rise up this mornin,
Smiled with the risin sun,
Three little birds
Pitch by my doorstep
Singin sweet songs
Of melodies pure and true,
Sayin, this is my message to you-ou-ou:

Singin: dont worry about a thing, worry about a thing, oh!
Every little thing gonna be all right. dont worry!
Singin: dont worry about a thing – I wont worry!
cause every little thing gonna be all right.

Singin: dont worry about a thing,
cause every little thing gonna be all right – I wont worry!
Singin: dont worry about a thing,
cause every little thing gonna be all right.
Singin: dont worry about a thing, oh no!
cause every little thing gonna be all right!

Hey guys! I FINALLY HAD MY EAR PIERCED FOR REAL!!! I had my left earlobe, on the upper right part pierced. I bought this really cool cross stud with a faux diamond stud at Unisilver earlier this morning, around 9AM then I had my ear pierced for free. The lady who did it used a gun (not the real gun but the gun used in ear-piercing of course). I had to make my own waiver and to sign their waiver as well just to persuade them to agree to do the piercing. Because they’ve had bad experiences with dumb clients who complained when their ears got irritated because of the ear-piercing.

I have one wee problem though. Tim is in Bacolod and he still doesn’t know about what I did. He knows that I really want this done ever since before we met and he has always told me that he doesn’t want to see me sporting a stud. But because he’s not here well nobody stopped me so the DEED was done. And I’m feeling so cool and elated.

I thought my ear was going to hurt so bad that I won’t be able to sleep but right now I’m feeling so drowsy that I’m going to end this post already. I only hope that my bebeh won’t be so angry with me when he sees my new earring. Hope he’ll understand.

I’ll have a photo here of my new fashion statement within this week guys! So proud of myself! :)

*post written October 8, 2008

UPDATE:

October 14, 2008. My bebeh and my parents had seen the stud. My parents – no comment. My bebeh – very angry (of course as expected) when he saw the stud then ignored me for a day. I felt a little guilty but then the deed was done so there’s nothing anyone can do about it. Anyway, he’s ignoring the ear too. Fine with me. as long as he doesn’t pull the stud off. Hehe. ;)

November 14, 2008. After a month, my ear’s still a little sore but I think it has healed. I can sleep without feeling it hurting now. And I don’t care much of hiding it anymore. I love my stud. ;)

*photos coming soon!

Yep, I bought myself an ABBA cd and this really cool and cute ear cuff kind of earring like the one that Meryl Streep was wearing on that movie. After my shift yesterday, I met up with my bebeh for breakfast then we went to SM Delgado’s department store and browsed through the CDs on sale. I found this ABBA album which features a compilation of their greatest hits. My bebeh was actually supposed to upload ABBA’s hits on my iPod but too bad his computer chose this time to break down. So because Mary Jane just can’t wait to hear those phenomenal chart-toppers I promptly bought myself a CD. I went home and listened to it before going to bed (which pumped me up instead of mellowing me down..haha) I sang and danced a little to their music (yeah, a “little”). :)

I also bought this cool ear-cuff from Unisilver which is a curved band of metal that is pressed onto the helix of the ear. I have to pinch it hard to make sure that it stays in place (It was kind of painful at first but I got used to it eventually). I actually wanted my ear pierced at the helix and wear a stud or clip-on earrings but Tim won’t let me. He says I will look like a punk and people are going to think that I’m a drug addict or something. It has so many negative connotations.

Oh well, I just have to content myself with a “non-pierce” earring. Anyway its not that bad-looking right? What do you think? ;)

By the way, the butterfly earring I’m wearing was bought by my bebeh about a couple of months ago. Goes well with the ear-cuff. :)

ABBA and the Movie Mamma Mia!

I grew up listening to ABBA’s songs. Actually I grew up listening to the Beatles, the BeeGees, the Carpenters, Eagles, Chicago, Kenny Rogers, Dr. Hook and other popular bands in the 70s and 80s. My parents are big fans of classic country and rock bands, especially my father. The group I particularly like listening to is ABBA. I love their songs. Its not like the songs of today which have mostly ‘shallow’ lyrics. Their songs describe life. They talk about everything we go through everyday. People can “relate” to their songs. And I think that’s the reason why they became so popular during their time, that’s the 1970s and even up until now.

ABBA is a Swedish pop group composed of four members; two guys and two gals. They are Benny Andersson, Agnetha Faltskog, Anni-Frid Lyngstad and Bjorn Ulvaeus. What I know about their group I learned from Papang. Benny Andersson actually co-produced the film version of the musical Mamma Mia! Thank God he did! :)

Mamma Mia made me feel good!

And based on Monica and the other movie-goers that watched the movie the same time as we did, they obviously enjoyed it too. And I based it on the reactions that I heard while Monica and I were on our way out.

We watched this movie last evening at SM City before our shift. I was with Monica because Tim’s at Cebu attending one of their company seminars. We opted for the last full show so we can come in on time for our shift which starts at 11 PM (Its 8 AM Pacific Standard Time). Mamma Mia! is a film adaptation of the West End stage musical, based on the songs of ABBA. The title of the film comes from the group’s 1975 chart-topper “Mamma Mia.” It was produced by Universal Pictures in partnership with Playtone and Littlestar.

Meryl Streep heads the cast of the film, playing the role of single mother Donna Sheridan. Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and Stellan Skarsgard play the three potential fathers to Donna’s daughter Sophie Amanda Seyfried. Imagine Meryl Streep’s “iciness” at The Devil Wears Prada and then imagine her singing, dancing and playing around. I really admire her versatility. And now imagine Pierce Brosnan’s “coolness” as the secret agent James Bond and doing the same things as Meryl in this movie. Plus Colin Firth and Stellan Skarsgard also romping around! God you’ll really get your money’s worth. I didn’t even know that these four actors can sing! Amanda Seyfried also did well as Sophie.

Today, I’m campaigning for everyone, particularly my officemates to watch this movie. They had to endure my ranting for the whole day especially Nang Cat and Abert who are both sitting beside me. Call me OA or whatever you like, basta nami guid ya ang Mamma Mia! ;)

You’ve got to watch it too to know what I mean and to know that I’m not over-exaggerating. You’ll miss 1/10 of your life if you won’t! ;)

Last Wednesday, Tim and I watched Wanted at SM City. We’ve seen Wanted’s trailer countless times before so I told my bebeh that when it comes out we really have to watch it! I’m not really a big fan of Angelina Jolie but still, I love the roles she play. Maybe its the ‘cool chick’ image, the “Don’t mess with me or else!” thingy that makes me want to watch her movies.

Anyway, Wanted is a 2008 action film based on the comic book series Wanted by Mark Millar. The film is directed by Timur Nuruakhitovich Bekmambetov, a Russian and Kazakh film and advertisement director. It stars: James McAvoy as Wesley Allan Gibson; Morgan Freeman as Sloan; Thomas Kretschmann as Cross; Konstantin Khabensky as The Exterminator; Lonnie Rashid Lynn, Jr. (better known by his stage name as Common Sense) as The Gunsmith; Marc Warren as The Repairman; Dato Bakhtadze as The Butcher; Terence Stamp as Pekwarsky; David O’Hara as Mr. X; Chriss Pratt as Barry; Kristen Hager as Cathy;and Angelina Jolie as Fox.

The story evolves around Wesley Gibson whose father left when he was just a week old. He has a job as an accounts manager which he hates. He suffers panic attacks which was later explained by Sloan that it is actually a very rare ability because when Wesley is under stress, it causes his heart to beat to an excess of 400 beats per minute, sending abundant amounts of adrenaline into his bloodstream. This allows him to see and react faster than normal. And Sloan tells him that his father also has this ability. He was recruited by The Fraternity-a thousand year old secret society of assassins and Sloan as the group’s leader invites him to join and follow his father’s footsteps. He didn’t want to at first but he had no choice because he was-as the reason for the title-wanted. Wanted by the police because of the damages he and Fox had done.

Then he woke up the next morning thinking everything was just a dream, only to discover that he still has his father’s gone given to him by Sloan. He discovers $3.6 million in his bank account. After that he quits his job after telling off his boss and knocking out his bestfriend’s teeth by slamming the keyboard into his face as he leaves. This friend was actually having a sexual relationship with his girlfriend.

He started training with the Fraternity at their headquarters which has a textile mill as a front. Now that he knows his father, he trained hard to avenge his death. He was taught to shoot, fight with knives and is desensitized to pain with regular beatings courtesy of the Repairman. The part of his training that I like the most is when he was taught by Fox on how to “curve the bullets” by slinging his gun in such a way that the bullet travels in a curve rather than a straight line. His training was very brutal, only endurable with the assistance of periodic medicinal baths that accelerate healing. After he completed his training, Wesley is given orders to kill people from The Loom of Fate, a loom that gives the name of the targets through a binary code hidden in the weaving of the threads. He refuses to kill his first assignment but Fox told him her life story, which helped him change his mind and do his assignments.During this time, Cross was evidently trying his best to kill Wesley. Wesley was curious to know who Cross really is after analyzing the bullet from his arm which was shot by Cross. It turns out that Cross was his real father and he was trying to tell this to Wesley, only the Fraternity got to him first. Pekwarsky was the one who told him all this after Wesley killed his own father. Cross was actually monitoring him all his life in the apartment opposite his. And the reason he left him when he was just a week old is because for him to have a normal life thats free of death and violence.

After learning the truth, he devises a plan to take out Sloan and the Fraternity. He filled a garbage truck with rats gorged on explosives-laced peanut butter and crashes the truck into the Fraternity compound and releases the rats. After the rats explode, he charges in killing all Fraternity members he encounters. Upon Sloan’s office, he finds himself surrounded by Fox and the other master assassins. Wesley tells them all that Sloan is killing for profit by providing his killers with fraudulent kill orders. He then attempts to kil Sloan, but is disarmed by Fox. She asked Sloan if what Wesley told them is true. Sloan then reveals that all of their names had come up in the weaving and that he had merely acted to protect them. He then goes to explain that if they truly believe in the code then they should all commit suicide right where they stand by putting the gun in their own mouths and pull the trigger. The other assassins decide to kill Wesley, but Fox turns on her fellow assassins. She curves a bullet to kill the assassins who had been standing in a circle, including herself. Sloan was able to escape.

Wesley, once again penniless does not know what to do with himself. A voice-over is then heard and a man is seen sitting in front of a computer in a cubicle that looks very much like Wesley’s. The man types the name “Wesley Gibson” into Google and searches for it but does not have any results, as in the beginning of the film. Sloan appears and points a gun at the man’s head. At that moment, the man turns around and is revealed to be a decoy. Wesley, who is actually several miles away, then shoots Sloan in the head.

This film  generally received very positive reviews from critics.

All I can say is that this line made me think:

“What the f*** have you done with your life lately?”

Are we all also in a dead-end, 9 to 5 desk job that we either tolerate or actually despise because we have to pay the bills even though our passion might be something else entirely that can’t pay for our living?

In my own understanding, Wanted urges us to find our own path that will transform our lives into one that’s worth living. We are to choose one where waking up and falling asleep every day isn’t all for nothing. Rather than just floating by, it is time to wake up and be alive!

Find and live your own calling.

I Want To Become A VIRTUAL ASSISTANT!

Virtual Assistant

A virtual assistant (VA) is a business owner providing professional level administrative, technical, or sometimes creative assistance to clients–usually to other independent entrepreneurs and solo and small business practices. Virtual assistants work from their own office (hence “virtual”), thus making it a fairly popular (and growing) profession. The number of virtual assistants worldwide is estimated at 5,000-8,000.

Common modes of communication and data delivery include the Internet (e.g. WWW, FTP and email), conference calls, online work spaces, and fax. Professionals in this business work on a contractual basis; long-lasting cooperation is common. Typically, at least five years of administrative experience in an office is expected at such positions as executive assistant, office manager/supervisor, secretary, legal assistant, paralegal, legal secretary, or real estate assistant.

I have stumbled upon this job while surfing the internet and other people’s blogs. I found it really interesting.

This days I often find myself scouring the internet for work at home jobs and right now being a virtual assistant is the number 1 stint on my list.

Don’t get me wrong, being a call center agent here in the Philippines is not a bad career at all. I just think that its time for me to move on because I have learned a lot already in the span of more than a year of being a telemarketer.

I’m still researching more about this career. If anyone could help me out about this, feel free to do so! ;)

my bebeh and i love to eat. evidence? ako syempre..because he’s always pestering me na i’m getting fat na daw. before i started working at callbox, i was quite satisfied with the ’shape of my body’–i was not fat or thin. but now, look at me! hehe

my bebeh says if i don’t stop eating too much and resume exercising soon i’ll be as fat as a pig (currently i’m just a ‘PIGLET’ according to Nong Jeffrey Torda, a co-worker).

what amazes me is that my bebeh and i usually eat the same food but he DOESN’T GET FAT. we don’t consume the same amount gani because most of the time we eat breakfast together and he eats 2 cups of rice while he tells me to eat just 1 cup (plus 1/2 cup if i’m really really hungry..hehehe).

our eating schedule is actually different because he works during the day while i the graveyard shift. and my job requires me to sit for hours at a time and i don’t really have to move or walk around a lot while he moves and travels a lot. maybe that explains why i’m gaining weight while he’s not?!

anyway..here’s the list of the places we frequently haunt–to eat! ^_^

Jollibee

across our office building is a branch of this very popular Filipino restaurant. because of its proximity to our building, my bebeh and i often eat here. we adore the fries. we already know all the waiters, waitresses and cashiers here..hehe..and they know us too. we notice agad if there’s a newbie and we enjoy the way they mess up and get confused about our orders..hehehe..

Greenwich

we love pizza! i love pizza, nalatnan na dayun c bebeh..hehehehe
Barbecue Park

thiis is located across the bridge at the back of our office building. they serve barbecue meals (obvious man sa name di ba). gakadto kami diri ni tim if early pa ko gaabot halin sa balay. we eat dinner there, basta my wawart..hehe we like their combo meals, affordable lang sya. and the calamares is great too! ^_^

Parajan

this is a deli that serves very affordable breakfast meals. it has many branches in iloilo. its very popular because they cook while you wait. usually na-order ni tim ang luncheon meat combo which includes a sunny side-up egg and 1 cup of rice. ako ya ang tocino meal, still includes a sunny side-up egg and 1 rice also. ^_^

Dapli

this is probably our favorite resto. Dapli Restaurant is owned by the owner of Breakthrough which is a popular restaurant in Villa. Dapli is located across SM Delgado, damu gahilera nga restos didto actually but we always come back sa Dapli. even if the food here is kinda expensive, reasonable man sya. the servings are good for groups of 2 or more. so nami magkadto didto in groups para maka-save. sometimes Monica, a co-worker and a friend comes with us. we love the crab meat, KBL (kadyos, baboy and langka.. ^_^), smoked fish, tortang talong, beef steak and Monica loves the hungarian sausage and cheesy omelette. basta, damu guid ya pilian and sure guid nga namit. they specialize in lutong-bahay and seafood. thats why namian man kami magbalik-balik. ^_^

my bebeh and i love to go to different places in and out of the city (but, i can’t beat him because his job takes him to various places outside iloilo, check out his page in the future to see pictures of the places he’s been to. ^_^).

here are some of the places we frequently haunt:
Villa Rica Beach Resort in Oton

this is one of the most popular beaches in my hometown. people from the city usually come here on weekends particularly during the summer. we love to sit in the sand, watch the waves, just talk and eat the junk foods we bought from the public market or the small grocery store in town.

once i went there by myself. nag-away kami, drama ko ya eh..hehe..i got scared because i went there mga around 5 na and medyo gamay lang tao. syempre, ang mary jane nanugid sa bebeh eh nga ato ko didto kag kung pwede kadtuan nya ko kay medyo scared ko gani..hehehe..naakigan pa ko..bad mary jane! hindi na ko kuno mag-drama pareho sadto liwat..

anyway, Villa Rica Beach is a nice place to go to when we want some peace and quiet.

(pictures of Villa Rica Beach coming soon.. ^_^)
The Malls

of course my bebeh and i haunt the malls too. we either go to SM City, SM Delgado, MaryMart or Robinson’s Place. he is always up to date with the new movies even before its showing date so alert kami maglantaw.

he’s always checking out the toys section at the deparment store for toys and ek eks to bring home to his nephew (nice tito! ^_^) he seldom buys things for himself because he says he’d rather eat and buy abobots for Alex (and for Toto Hans also if he’s here. ^_^) than to indulge himself.

we play arcade games too at Game Galaxy on the 3rd floor. binata-bata nga games ah..hehe..we collect the tickets nga nadaugan namon sa games and which are now stuffed on my aparador at home. ambot anuhon ko to ky hindi pa man damu-damu para mapabayluhan na sang mga toys, etc. sa Game Gal. padamuon lang namon anay ni bebeh ah. ^_^

((pictures of the malls coming soon.. ^_^)
Plaza Oton

after going to church galagaw-lagaw man kami ni bebeh sa plaza sang Oton. we like it there because of the tall trees, canopied gazebos (which look scary because daw my mahulog nga snakes or insects anytime..hehe). pero katawhay lang sa plaza ky malamig (because of the trees) and namian si bebeh maglantaw sa mga gahampang basketball. basta, kasadya lang because damu kami makita.

(pictures of the plaza coming soon.. ^_^)
[more of our favorite haunts soon.. ^_^]
